I first discovered Urbane-Natural.com a year or so ago and when I found out writer was local to the DMV area, I knew we had to connect! Fast forward to now, I've not only met this cool chick but I also love and support the amazing natural hair & skin products that she makes! So I'd like you to et to know Ashley, the edgy Naturalista behind Urbane-Natural.com....
Tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a 22 year old full time college student at Morgan State University in Baltimore Maryland. My hobby is creating. I can create anything from butters, to jewelry to music. Creating is a huge outlet for me; it’s become a huge part of me as well. I dream of owning my own empire, helping African Americans love themselves and their hair using natural methods; hopefully creating a gateway for holistic living.
How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural for 4 years now, the first time I transitioned with weaves, the second time I big chopped and worked with my hair through the stages.
Have you experienced any criticism since being natural?
Yes I have received a bit of criticism here and there. I normally brush it off or throw a snide comment out there; I don’t take well to rudeness about anyone’s natural journey. I don’t think that people started fully accepting my hair until it got into a large afro however, until then they just had to deal.
What is your biggest challenge with your hair?
My biggest challenge with my hair is finding a shampoo that I don’t have to prepoo with every time. I’ve tried the co-wash only method and it isn’t for me, and shampooing regularly dries my hair and scalp out.
What are you staple or "go-to" products?
My staple go-to product is an aloe-whipped version of my Mango Shea for moisturizing my hair along with Coconut oil for shine.
What inspired you to create your own natural hair products?
My never ending quest for an all-natural moisturizer and a gift of mixing. A lot of times when you read the labels of all natural products they include things you either can’t pronounce or sound very fishy. I pride myself in creating products with all natural ingredients, while keeping hair care healthy and natural. I noticed that I wasn’t the only one who found all natural products less than natural and decided to make my products available to the public.
What has been the best part of your natural hair journey?
The best part of my natural journey was rediscovering a love for myself, and loving myself just the way I was made.
Tell us about Urbane-Natural.com. How did the blog start?
My blog started as an online documentation of my natural hair journey and is now the inspiration of all of my entrepreneur endeavors.
What do you think makes Urbane-Natural.com unique from other blogs on the web?
I think what makes my blog different from others is the urban feel I try to give it. I try to incorporate style, street and a little bit of grunge while still informing my readers about natural hair and how to take care of it.
