The new My Tropical Roots line was sent to me to review on Traditional Locs and I have used it a few times over the past few months on TB's hair to retwist his locs. This particular review is for the "Firm Locking Gel".
The gel itself is a soft pink color and has a gel/yogurt-like consistency.
Since this is for "Firm Locking" I used this on styles where he was not going to let the locs dry with clips but instead wanted a style (braids, two-strand twists, etc). The hold of this product without clips is really great! With TB's soft texture using our normal products his palm-roll would have naturally untwisted but using this products his hair stayed in place and looked really neat.
The ingredients include Water, AMP-Acrylates/Allyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Glycerin, Aminomethyl Propanol, Acrylates/C10-30, Alkyl Acrylate Copolymer , Panthenol, DMDM Hydation, Vitamin B-12 and Fragrance....
Now I know ya'll are the WTH, I was too, but we wanted to see the results because it says it'll provide "long lasting hold", "promotes growth", won't leave build up, and is "filled with natural ingredients"....
The only drawback of this products is the build up, despite claiming there would be no build up. When I first apply the product to TB's wet hair, it emulsifies nicely and doesn't gook up like some other gels/creams. However, as I palm-roll the loc, with or without added oils, a white residue emerges and I would dab it with a towel to remove it.
Overall, I loved the hold of this product and it definitely provides "firm locking" however I didn't particularly like the build-up of the product and after using it a few times it left a visible "buildup line" in his locs. I would suggest if you're going to try this product to also get a good clarifying shampoo!

I tried this product for the first time 3 days ago. At first, I loved it because it held my coil twists firmly and didn't cause my hair to shrink as bad as other gels. After I pulled them out some today, the build up and white residue is unbearable. My main reason for purchasing is because the container states no flaking or build up. Due to this, I am not a fan and will not use again.
