Starting My Sisterlocks Over?

Those of you that follow me on Instagram or Twitter know that I just finished taking the Sisterlocks Training class and I am now a Sisterlocks Consultant. You probably also saw me mention that I was considering cutting off my Sisterlocks….and starting over.

The Sisterlocks Training class was so eye-opening and insightful that a lot of things I thought to be true about Sisterlocks and the maintenance actually turned out to be false! I was unsettled to say the least. I learned more in the last 4 days about my Sisterlocks and Sisterlocks in general than I have in the past 2 years!

With my new found insight, I also had to come to the realization that I have been, unknowingly, mistreating my Sisterlocks and my establishment was not as strong as it could have been. This is what made me consider cutting off my Sisterlocks and starting over…but I just can't let go. Instead, I am going to work to repair my Sisterlocks and utilize better practices that will help my Sisterlocks to fully settle and mature not weaken.

Consequently, I will be taking down some of my previous videos and/or posts and replacing them with updated more accurate content and information. In this recent video, "Starting My Sisterlocks Over?", I address exactly what changes I need to make.

  1. OMGoodness! Your video makes me want to take the sisterlock classes just to educate myself. We have a similar hair texture hair & from what you were stating ive been doing things wrong too (not wearing a shower cap, not bundeling properly). My sisterlocks are 5.5mos old so I think correcting things now will help with my lumps, etc. as they do settle. Good luck with your changes hun & congrats on becoming a consultant!

    1. I highly recommend the Sisterlocks Class! Its very informative but it also depends on who teaches the class...not all Trainers are the same or give the same information.

I'm glad that I could give you information to help you along in your journey and definitely mention to your Consultant to repair your lumps earlier rather than later.

  2. Thanks for sharing this information. I have Sisterlocks and on Sept 25th I will have been locked 1 year. Prior to locking my natural hair type was a 4b/c (CNAPP) type of hair so I expected it to settle and "bud" really quickly. It has in some places but not in others. I must say that my Consultant does a great job keeping my locs uniform, groomed and tightened but I do plan to at some point take the class to maintain my own hair. However, I have a few locs where I'm noticing what appears to be a "knot" in my locs. Did you have those or experience knots? And from your training what is to be done about knots?? I follow you blog and follow you on twitter. If you want to see my loc journey visit: jaislocz.blogspot.com.
    Thanks again for sharing.

    1. Just checked out your blog and your Sisterlocks look great! If you're noticing knots, you should talk to your Consultant and get her to correct them, if possible. Some knots truthfully can't be corrected so it is best to catch them early.

  3. Hello:

Thanks so much for sharing this information. I also feel as though I need to take the class and save my hair. I am at the point that I won't to cut my hair off and I cam across your video. It itches all of the time and I have the fat bottoms..UGH I do NOT like that-
So, I am not sure whether I will start over again but I know that MUST do something soon. I am the only black woman of color in my office and I want to represent well. Thanks again for your info!

    1. Hey Nathalie! I do sell the "Anti-Itch" Mist in the SHOP which won't damage the integrity of your Sisterlocks and will stop the itching. As for your "fat bottoms" if your hair is fully settled, I would suggest talking to your Consultant and possibly trimming but if they aren't fully settled, give it time and they might shrink down as they mature.

  4. I recognize that look in you eyes! I also took the Sisterlock Class last year in December and came out analyzing my Sisterlocks. Everyone who had Sisterlocks wanted the trainer's opinion on their locks. The bunching of the locs, your hair texture can cause this as well. Frizzy locs just part of the locing process, Our hair loves 02! Remember your hair is unique and has it's on pathway to locking. I think your locs look GREAT even with problems! Welcome to the Sisterlock Trained Family!

    1. Yeah, I tried to get the Master Trainer to do a full analyze on me, but she didn't, lol. Thank you for the compliment and warm welcome :)

  5. Go for it! I took down my Sisterlocks and did the front over. It took a while and a lot of patience, but I had to give it a try. Plus, it's rewarding to say, I did it myself. The back of mine was done with the help of a classmate/friend.

  6. Thank you so much for sharing! I've been on the sister loc journey for 5 years...and like you, my curl pattern is similar. I still have locs that have not locked.

By chance have you ever use apple cider vinegar on your hair? I am looking for a recipe. Do you have a video on how to trim locs? I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks for your time!
