Last night Jess of HairGetsKinky.com and I did a live tutorial on how to put in Havana/Marley Twists.
I used Marley Braid hair to do the twists because it blends easier with natural hair and creates a nice chunky twist.
When we first started we determined the sizing of the twists that she wanted. First I used only 2 strands of Marley Braid hair and created a twist then I used 3 strands of Marley Braid hair to create a twist.
The sizing of the twist with 3 strands was the size she wanted so we used 3 strands for all the twists except the edges. Around the edges I used 2 strands so that they wouldn't put too much stress on her edges, especially because the twists are down her back.
While putting in the twists we used Shea Radiance "Moisture Rich Hair Butter" to give the Marley hair some sheen and aide in blending. I recommend using a heavy butter or pomade vs an oil or water-based product. We also used Eden Body Works "Jojoba Oil" to oil her scalp. This was my first time using these products and I LOVED them, especially the Jojoba Oil because it was a spray and made it easy to apply.
After we finished putting in all the twists, we pretzeled the ends with Flexi-Rods to give the ends some curl instead of just being straight. After we pretzeled the ends, we dipped them in boiling hot water.
Voila!
While we broadcasted, we recorded a few segments and you can view them on the Ustream Channel [HERE].
If you don't want to do them yourself and are in the DMV area, come see me and I'll hook you up!

Love it!! How many packs of hair was used
ReplyDeleteThank you. Between 3-4. I don't remember for sure.
DeleteHi! I love these. Someone who's never done them before wants to try them out..any beginner tips. I want to make sure the real hair to marley hair ratio is even enough to look right. These are the prettiest I've seen!
ReplyDeleteAwww thank you! You can watch tutorials on Youtube...there are hundreds!
DeleteHi! You did a good job! I want to do my hair this way. I have a few questions though. Do I put the braids in with my hair washed and blow dryed then apply conditioner or do I let it air dry to keep my curl pattern and apply conditioner and water and gel? What can i apply to it to keep it looking fresh? A remist spray or water?
ReplyDeleteThese twists are done on dry hair. So you can blow dry your hair with a heat protectant or stretch your hair and let it air dry with bantu knots before you put in the twists. You can take a look at this post, http://bit.ly/YpT50i, for how to keep your hair moisturized with the twists in.
DeleteHi I am from South Africa and love the hair...What other fibre brands can I use if I don't have the Marley hair fibre in my country?
