Hair Diary | Chunky & Frizzy

Today, I was really enjoying the look of my locs; despite them being frizzy, messy, and chunky, to me they are beautiful!

But why are my locs so frizzy and messy nowdays? Good question....

I recently started practicing Bikram Yoga, which is done in an 105℉ room so there is lots of sweating and humidity, thus my locs have swelled up and been really messy lately. At first, I looked in the mirror and was like "Oh no! It's time to retwist and make them neat again" but my boyfriend was very encouraging and against the constant retwisting. After taking a moment to think about his suggestion, he is right; I don't need to have "neat locs" all the time and if I am going to be working out more I will need to embrace my locs. Fortunately for me, this was easy to do because I want and like the look of thick locs.

Along with the sweating and swelling of my locs, I've also been experiencing a lot of itching...crazy itchy scalp! Typically I would just wash my hair to stop the itching but I don't want to get accustomed to washing my hair every week (which has been my regimen thus far) so right now, I am almost to two-weeks without washing! Admittedly, I am anxious to wash my hair but proud of myself for the discipline I've shown in this past 10 days....only 4 more to go, lol.

If you're just starting a new journey and are experiencing any challenges, itchy scalp, feeling "unpretty", unhappy with the phase your hair is in, etc.. I want to tell you to stay encouraged! Embrace your nu growth and the happiness will soon follow. If nobody has told you lately, I'm telling you that you're beautiful and hair is just hair, it doesn't define who you are!

  1. I am embracing my chunky locs too! I decided to freeform for 2 months because I to was twisting way to much. I am afraid of them being stressed out in the long run. So I am with you girl!! 1AdornWifeMom

    1. Awesome! Can't wait to check out the update on your freeforming! I don't think I could go down that route...at least not anytime soon, lol.

  2. Thanks so much for this! With my scalp, I HAVE to wash weekly, but once my locs are formed, I'll stop twisting as much, but as it stands right now, I have to retwist them after each wash. I really appreciate encouraging spaces like this one.
