Beauty & The Blog | Jess of Hair Gets Kinky When Wet

You might remember Jess from our live "Havana Twist Tutorial" [HERE] or from various meetups we host in the area with our Natural Hair Talk Show "The Mane Definition." So, I'm really excited to finally be able to feature her and for you to get to know a little bit about her & her mane.

Tell us a little about yourself?
Hi, I'm Jess and I blog over at HairGetsKinky.com (it's my two-year anni!). I'm a twenty-something who loves to frolick around DC while spreading the natural hair gospel.

How long have you been natural? Did you transition or do the Big Chop?
I got my last relaxer when I was 13 and transitioned for a couple of years. So I've been natural for about 12 years!

What is your hair type/curl pattern and your current regimen?
I have several different curl patterns on my head! The front has looser, more defined curls than the back of my hair. I have fine, but thick hair...so the strands themselves are thinner but there are a ton of them! My regimen is pretty simple--I shampoo and condition my hair every week and try to deep condition after every other wash. There are tons of great products I could rave about but the Shea Radiance brand, coconut oil and Mahogany Queen's whipped shea butter have been my favorites lately.

What is your biggest challenge with your hair?
My hair tangles like nobody's business sometimes and because my hair is fine, it is easier to break it off if I'm not careful. Second, I love volume and it takes a couple of days for my hair to "poof" up after a fresh twist-out so I'm not content until third- or fourth-day hair!

Have you ever thought about starting locs or are you planning to get locs?
I fantasize about getting locs all the time! But I don't know if I'm patient enough for them. I'm also afraid that mine will be too thin. When you had your sisterlocs, I did feel the temptation to loc it up since I saw how versatile sisterlocs can be. Give me a few years to meditate on it and we'll see what happens! haha

What are you staple or "go-to" products? Why?
I love coconut oil and shea butter based products. My hair and skin just GLOWS. My fav leave-in of all time is the Kinky-Curly Knot Today. The detangling and moisturizing job it does for me is amazing. It's the one product I've had in my regimen the longest. I just got hooked on JessiCurl's Too Shea conditioner--it's awesome! I'm also in love with Shea Radiance's Moisture Rich Hair Butter for sealing and their new Keratin Deep Conditioning Hair Mask has been doing wonders on my hair lately. It's been very strong and extra shiny and I've noticed less frizz.

What product(s) have you tried in your natural hair that you would NOT recommend?
The only hair line I can say I have NEVER had luck with is Miss Jessie's. I've tried several products but my hair just can't get with it. Also, I love to experiment with making my own beauty products and when making your own deep conditioner, I'm gonna say leave the egg alone. My body heat alone was enough to make the egg solidify in my hair and it was a MESS to wash out!

As a Blogger, what do you want people to gain or remember from reading your blog?
I am very open on my blog and I want people to trust that I'm sharing the purest version of my natural hair experience possible. You see not just my great hair days and victories, but my hair frustrations as well. I also want people to feel free to reach out to me if they have questions or share any new information they find with me because I'm always learning, too! I make myself very accessible--whether it's through post comments, facebook, twitter or email I want people to reach back out to me!

Anything else you'd like to share?
Um...I like it kinky *wink wink*
